The Virus Diary project is the outcome of the early pandemic uncertainty when the Romanian artist Dan Perjovschi was scheduled to do a solo exhibition at the White Cuib Gallery in Cluj-Napoca. The initial event was postponed, planned to be adapted to the closed gallery’s windows, then on the gallery’s social media pages, where the artist quickly rendered it into an opportunity for hearing a diversity of voices on the Covid-19 global lockdown.
The generic title of the project was purposely used to include more perspectives on how others related to the quarantine, its impact on the world, and their reflections on how a new visual language was adjusting the reality. Despite the free movement restrictions, as well as the negative impact on the fragile Romanian art scene, the Virus Diary became an immaterial shared space for free thinking, expression, and togetherness.
The Virus Diary was an experimental exhibition displayed online in several posts a day during the first nine weeks of the pandemic. In the early stages, Perjovschi and the gallery team gradually invited more artists to get involved in the project and thus it became a collective effort. Over 25 Romanian and international artists, plus guest artists, were involved as permanent contributors during the peak weeks. For nine weeks in a row, from morning to night, the White Cuib’s online presence provided its audience with a wide range of interpretations, while offering to the artists whose activity was affected by the pandemic a chance to refocus from uncertainty and anxiety to a form of visual dialogue.
